The final scene - the production schedule's, not the movie's - featured Cruise arguing with his on- and off-screen lover, Australian actress Nicole Kidman.įrom that moment on, editors, sound technicians, musicians and publicists worked overtime to wrap up "Thunder" for Wednesday's national premier. Scott and photographer Ward Russell wrapped up the movie at 4 a.m. in early April, much later than originally planned. Slowed by an unusually harsh North Carolina winter and the complexity of on-track stunts, Paramount crews were still filming at Darlington, S.C. Simpson, Bruckheimer, Towne and director Tony Scott pushed "Days of Thunder" to the ragged edge.

"Thunder's" other on-track scenes came from Winston Cup races at Charlotte, Daytona Beach, Atlanta, Darlington, North Wilkesboro, Talladega and the Winston Racing Series track at Barberville, Fla.Īdditional "action" scenes came from an inactive airstrip near Flagler Beach, Fla., up and down the city streets and along the surf of Daytona Beach, and around Lake Norman, N.C., home of many NASCAR racers. It marked the first time movie-related cars had qualified and run in a regularly scheduled Winston Cup race. There, Greg Sacks and Bobby Hamilton gathered "live" footage from Hendrick-provided camera cars. In early November, they got extensive footage from the Autoworks 500 near Phoenix, Ariz. On August 26, Paramount crews filmed scenes from the night race near Bristol, Tenn.

In August, as Towne finally shaped up Cruise's original screenplay, Simpson flew to Daytona Beach for a make-or-break meeting with France.īy all accounts, NASCAR's bossman was non-commital until Simpson said he wanted to change the public's perception of motorsports by portraying NASCAR as the high-tech, professional sport it really is. No strangers to success, their credits included "Flashdance," "Beverly Hills Cop," "Top Gun" and "Beverly Hills Cop II." All told, their hits (and bomb "Thief of Hearts") generated more than $2 billion in the second half of the 1980s.ĭespite all that high-powered Hollywood talent, "Thunder" still needed the unconditional blessing of NASCAR president Bill France Jr. Paramount offered the project to producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer. Noted screenwriters Donald Stewart and Warren Skaaren failed before Academy Award-winner Robert Towne came through last fall. Tanen and Paramount agreed to stand by the project if someone could deliver an acceptable script. Because he was involved with "Rain Man" and saw "Born on the Fourth of July" on the horizon, he didn't have time to rewrite it. In fact, it almost didn't make it beyond the Olive Garden in Daytona Beach and Tanen's office in Hollywood.Ĭruise's original story was deemed flat, awkward and unacceptable. "Thunder" began to grow after Cruise talked Paramount executive Ned Tanen (another fan of motorsports) into supporting the project.ĭespite Cruise's enthusiasm for the project, it developed slowly.

With each passing tale, Cruise became more convinced that a quality movie built around racing would sell. That night Hendrick, Geoff Bodine and several crewmen regaled Cruise and Newman with earthy stories about life on the NASCAR circuit. During a private test session in January 1986, Cruise drove a Robert Gee-built, Hendrick-owned Busch Series car around the 2.5-mile speedway.Īfter reaching almost 175 miles per hour, he climbed from the car and excitedly told Hendrick, "Hey, we gotta make a movie about this."
